The United States is the birthplace of many popular global chains and enclosed malls were born here. Today, visitors can find a range of shopping outlets throughout the US. Shopping malls, strip malls, chains, outlets, retail centers, flea markets and even auctions can be found within major cities. Department stores like Macy’s and Nordstrom are common throughout and discount big boxes like Walmart and Kmart are also prevalent. However, there are certain cities that are renowned for their shopping culture and retail therapy.
Los Angeles
The Westside district of Los Angeles is the most affluent area of the city, and home to the bulk of high-end designer fashion. Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills is iconic for its brand names and glitzy people watching. Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade also boasts an interesting retail culture. Downtown LA is a place for specialty items, including Fashion District, Jewelry District and the Flower District.
New York City
New York City is the powerhouse of US fashion and rivals the likes of Milan and Paris. Even though there are department stores all over the city, New York boasts several important shopping areas. Fifth Avenue in Midtown contains many global brands like Saks, Cartier, Tiffany’s, and a massive Bloomingdale’s complex. Macy’s is found in the Theatre District, and is the largest department store in the world. Madison Avenue is another affluent street filled with expensive yet fascinating designer stores.
Miami
Definitely a secondary location compared to the big dogs, Miami still flaunts its consumerism. There are two main shopping areas both in South Beach, Collins Avenue and Lincoln Road. Both have a variety of stores for fashion, electronics, music and more.
