Yeager Airport
The main airport serving the state, also the largest in West Virginia, was renamed after Brigadier General Chuck Yeager in 1985. The airport is located four miles from Charleston, on a hilltop 100 meters above the Elk and Kanawha River valleys. When flying in and out of the airport, passengers can enjoy stunning views of the city, the rolling hills, and the rivers below. Regular flights arrive from Atlanta, New York City, Detroit, Chicago, Charlotte, Houston, and Washington, DC.
The single terminal airport houses a gift shop, which also sells books and snacks. There is no duty-free shop here, however, as there are no international flight services at the airport. There is a pizzeria onsite, as well as a family-friendly sit-down restaurant for passengers wishing to fill their bellies before continuing on their journeys. Other airport amenities include shower facilities, a VIP lounge, a conference room, and counters for arranging charter aircraft services.
In the baggage claim area of the airport, passengers will find car rental representatives from Avis, Hertz, Budget, Alamo, and Enterprise. Cars can be picked up in the car rental lot, just outside of the passenger terminal. Some of the higher-end hotels in Charleston offer complimentary shuttle bus services into the city, which should be arranged before arrival. There are no public buses that travel between the airport and the city center, although there is a taxi stand next to the car rental lot for those that don’t wish to drive themselves. The journey from the airport to the city center takes less than 10 minutes along I-77.
