The official language of St Lucia is English. Although there is also local dialect of French patois spoken, everyone will be able to communicate in English, particularly in the tourist areas.


The local currency in St Lucia is the Eastern Caribbean dollar. Sometimes hotels will quote their prices in US dollars, and will often accept this currency for payment. However, to avoid confusion between the two currencies, always confirm which currency vendors are asking for; often they will quote prices in both. There are a few ATMs in the main towns of St Lucia. ATMs can dispense both Eastern Caribbean and US dollars.

Electricity in St Lucia runs at 240V/50Hz. You may need a transformer if your electrical appliance differs from this standard (most North American appliances run at 110-120 volts). They use a British style, flat three-pin sockets. You will need an adaptor if your plug does not meet these standards.


The international calling code for St Lucia +1-758. Cell phone communication is good in St Lucia, although do not expect much coverage in areas of dense rainforest. If you have international roaming on your phone you can connect to the local network. Otherwise, prepaid mobile phones are available to rent at the airport. St Lucia also has good high speed internet available in the majority of hotels and tourist spots.


Duty-free goods can be purchased at Hewanorra International Airport If you are traveling to the US you are allowed to import one liter of alcohol and 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, or four pounds of tobacco.
