St Vincent and the Grenadines is a tropical country in the Caribbean Sea which experiences two distinct seasons: the ‘dry’ season, and the ‘wet’ season. It still rains in the dry season, although the rain is in the form of very short downpours known as ‘trade showers’. The wettest month is July, where rain falls for an average of 26 days; the driest month is April, which sees just six days of rain.

There is not much variation in the temperature; it is only just slightly warmer during the wet season. In July the average day time high is 86°F, dropping to 76°F at night, and in January the average high is 85°F, dropping to 72°F at night. The islands experience north easterly breezes called ‘trade winds’, which makes it feel cooler and more comfortable.

St Vincent and the Grenadines is within the Atlantic hurricane belt; the last major cyclone hit in 1999. Warning systems are in place, although you can at least expect storms during the hurricane season. The official hurricane season is between June and November, which coincides with the wet season. However, St Vincent and the Grenadines is located at the edge of the hurricane belt, reducing the risk of a hurricane passing directly over the country.

Best Time to Visit St Vincent and the Grenadines

The most popular time to visit St Vincent and the Grenadines is during the dry season, and the busiest months are December to April, where many visitors will be escaping the cooler climes of the northern hemisphere winter. Visiting during the wet season, between July and November, offers reduced hotel prices and the rain keeps the islands lush and verdant. Perhaps a good time to visit is in the months of May, June, or November, where crowds are less and prices are good value for money.

As well as Christmas and Easter holidays, the month of June can get busy in St Vincent and the Grenadines as it hosts the annual carnival known as ‘Vincy Mas’. During this 12-day festival it is best to book accommodation early to avoid missing out. Some resorts also close during the months of September and October for renovation works.
