Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport
The main airport serving St Kitts and Nevis is Robert L Bradshaw, in the capital city, Basseterre, roughly in the middle of the island of St Kitts. This is the country’s main international gateway, with direct flights to Atlanta, Miami, and New York-JFK; served by American Airlines and Delta. There are also regular flights to Puerto Rico, served by American Eagle. There is a seasonal direct flight to Toronto served by Air Canada, and British Airways flies the only direct route to Europe, to London-Gatwick. There are also regional flights to nearby Caribbean destinations, and to connect with the island of Nevis there are daily flights served by LIAT and Winnair. You will be transported on a propeller powered plane, the journey takes just 15 minutes.
The airport underwent a major upgrade in 2006 to increase capacity; it handles about 400,000 passengers annually. As part of the renovation the airport has updated passenger services, including many places to eat, retail stores, duty free stores for international passengers. There are many taxis available on arrival at the airport to take you downtown, a journey of no more than ten minutes. Taxis are also willing to take you further afield on the island, including hotels on the southern peninsula. Taxis are not metered, but do offer a fixed rate. Details of prices to various destinations are posted at the airport taxi stand, although note that there is a 50 percent surcharge for journeys between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
Vance W. Amory International Airport
This is the country’s second airport, located in the town of Newcastle on the island of Nevis. It is an international airport, although no routes go to North America or Europe, it is most likely you will be entering the airport on a domestic flight from the island of St Kitts. The route from Basseterre airport to Vance W Amory takes about 15 minutes; there are daily flights served by LIAT and Winair.
Newcastle is about eight miles from Charlestown, which is the largest town in Nevis. This journey will take about maximum fifteen minutes by taxi. Taxis do not run on a meter so you should negotiate the price with the driver.
