Federated States of Micronesia Travel Guide

Federated States of Micronesia — Travel Tips

Language

English is the official language taught in schools, and is spoken widely throughout the Federated States of Micronesia. Still, it is only a second language for many locals as most speak a distinct dialect of Austronesian origins. Nuclear Micronesian languages such as Chuukese, Kosraean, Pohnpeian, and Yapese are spoken on the main islands, along with other tongues like Ulithian, Kapingamarangi, Woleaian, and Nukuoro.

Currency

The Federated States of Micronesia uses the US dollar (USD, US $) as its official currency. Giant stone money is still in use on the island of Yap, but certainly not for transactions that involve visitors. Tourist businesses and hotels accept most major credit cards, and traveler’s checks may also be exchanged in these establishments. ATMs are likewise available throughout the major islands.

Time

GMT + 0:00.

Electricity

Electricity is at 120 Volts (60 Hz) on the islands. Standard round two-pin type plugs are used, following US standards.

Communications

The country code for the Federated States of Micronesia is 691, but the area codes for each state vary. Chuuk uses 330, while Pohnpei, Yap, and Kosrae use 320, 350 and 370, respectively. Telecommunication services are available via the FSM Telecomm. Corp., though connections are quite a challenge due to the geographical isolation and position of the islands. Internet services are also readily available.

Duty-free

Travelers over the age of 18 may bring up to 600 cigarettes or 454 g of tobacco or cigars, two liters of alcoholic beverages (over 21) and a reasonable amount of perfume for personal use without incurring customs.
