US External Territories Taxis and Car Rental
Getting around the main islands of the US External Territories by taxi is easy. All taxis are regulated and run to a meter, as in the mainland US. In American Samoa, you can call Island Taxi (+1-684-633-5645). In Guam, you can call Independent Taxi Association (+1-671-888-5056). In Puerto Rico, you can call Puerto Rico Tourist Taxi (+1-787-969-3260). In the US Virgin Islands, you can call Islander Taxi (+1-340-774-4077). In any of the US External Territories, you can hail a taxi on the street.
Renting a car in American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands is possible. You simply need a US driver’s license or an International Driving Permit and you can choose from several providers. The road rules are the same as those in the mainland US, except that in the US Virgin Islands traffic drives on the left. Also, in Puerto Rico most of the road signs are written in Spanish. US External Territories Ferries
There are no passenger ferries to American Samoa and Guam, but they are stopovers for many cruise ships. On arrival in American Samoa, you can use private boat operators to take you to Ofu or Olosega islands. From Puerto Rico, there is a regular ferry passenger between Mayaguez and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. There are also domestic passenger ferries traveling between Fajardo and San Juan. There is an inter-island ferry from Fajardo in Puerto Rico to St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. No passport is required for American citizens to travel between Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Additionally, there is a passenger ferry that connects the islands of St Thomas and St John, from Red Hook to Cruise Bay.
US External Territories Trains and Buses
There are no passenger rail services on American Samoa, Guam, or the US Virgin Islands, but there is a small urban rail system around the metropolitan area of San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is called the Tren Urbano and consists of 16 stations on a single line. Train fares are reasonably priced and tickets are interchangeable with the urban bus system.
Puerto Rico has the most extensive bus system. There is a well-developed bus network here serving the city of San Juan. For travel to other areas of the island, you will need to use your own car or a taxi, or you can opt to use the shared taxi service called publico. Some publicos are cars, while others are 15-seater minibuses. They travel on set routes to many places around Puerto Rico. You can either call them the day before to ask them to collect you from your hotel or you can head to the publico station in Rio Piedras, San Juan, and wait in line for departure.
