Imam Khomeini International Airport
There is one main international airport in Iran, Imam Khomeini, which is the main gateway for visitors to the country. There are currently no direct flights from North America so visitors can connect through Europe or the Middle East in Vienna, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Dubai, Kuwait, or Abu Dhabi. Airlines that currently fly into Tehran include: Jazeera Airways, Iran Air, Caspian Airlines, Austrian Air, Air Arabia, Lufthansa, and Pegasus Airlines, but carrier services change frequently so visitors should check for the most up to date information.
The airport is modern and offers basic travel amenities on three levels. There are restaurants, coffee shops, currency exchanges, and shops within the terminal. International airlines have business lounges in the gate area.
The airport is located roughly 23 miles southwest of the city center. The main form of transportation from the airport to downtown is by car. Visitors can drive themselves, take a taxi or rent an airport cab. The journey to Tehran can take 1.5 hours or more depending on traffic so be sure to leave enough time in your itinerary for delays. Many hotels are able to arrange airport pickups so check with your lodging in advance.
Mehrabad International Airport
Those wanting to travel within Iran by air will have to use Mehrabad International Airport. Iran’s domestic hub is located in the southwestern part of the capital, about 40 miles from Khomeini International Airport. Visitors should leave plenty of time if they are catching a flight as traffic is no better here. Taxis are the best way to get from one airport to the other and fares should be negotiated in advance.
