Currency

The currency of Tonga is the pa’anga. This is subdivided into 100 seniti. Colloquially, you will hear pa’anga and seniti being called dollars and cents, respectively.

Electricity

Electricity in Tonga runs at 220-240V/50Hz variable. You may need a transformer if your electrical appliance differs from this standard (most North American appliances run at 110-120V). The country uses a flat, two-pinned, angled Australian-style plug with a grounding pin. You will need an adaptor if your plug does not meet these standards.

Do not expect 3G networks, only talk and text. The landline telephone network is developed, connecting all cities and towns. Tonga has fairly fast internet connection since it is connected to an undersea cable that links the US and Australia. There are a few internet cafés in touristic areas and hotels.

Duty-free

Duty-free goods can be purchased at Fua’amotu International Airport. If you are traveling to the US, you are allowed to import one liter of alcohol and 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, or four pounds of tobacco. Those entering Tonga who are 18 year or above have a duty-free concession of: 2.25 liters of spirits or 4.5 liters of wine or beer and two cartons of cigarettes not exceeding 500 grams.
