Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport in Dili is the main international gateway to East Timor. Only recently able to accommodate large aircraft, it is served by carriers Airnorth, Air Timor, Batavia Air, Merpati, and Timor Air, with direct flights to and from Darwin, Singapore and Denpasar. US travelers can connect through Bali, which is a more economical option than Darwin or Singapore; plus, the island makes for an interesting stopover, Eat, Pray, Love style. The terminal has only basic amenities. The trip from the airport to the city (four miles/six kilometers away) is no hassle, thanks to many public transportation options and reasonable taxi fares.
