Language

The English spoken in Oklahoma is an interesting dialect blend of Texas and the southeastern states. A slight twang will be heard from many of the residents but it isn’t difficult to understand.

Currency

The currency used in Oklahoma is the US dollar (US$). Banknotes come in denominations of US$1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100. There are 100 cents in US$1, with coins in denominations of 1, 5, 10, and 25 cents. Foreign currency is best exchanged in major city banks, also a good place to find international ATMs. Credit cards like Visa and MasterCard are accepted in most businesses, but traveler’s checks are probably better cashed in at a local bank.

Time

Oklahoma is in the Central Time Zone (GMT -6, GMT -5 between March 12 and November 4 during daylight savings).

Electricity

Oklahoma uses electricity at 110-120 Volts, 60Hz. Flat two-prong plugs are typical, so it is recommended that you travel with a universal plug adapter if you are coming from Europe or Asia.

Communications

The dialing code for the United States is +1. There are four area codes used in Oklahoma: 405 (Oklahoma City), 539/918 (Tulsa), and 580 (western and southern Oklahoma). Mobile phone reception can get patchy the farther you get from the towns because there are many areas of empty land. Internet Wi-Fi hot spots are easiest to find in the big cities like Oklahoma City and Tulsa, usually at coffee shops or in public libraries.

Duty-free

Every visitor arriving in America over the age of 18 may carry one liter of alcohol, 200 cigarettes (or 50 non-Cuban cigars or two kilograms of tobacco), and gifts valued at US$400 without paying duty tax.
