Newark Liberty International Airport
New Jersey’s main airport is located just 16 miles south of Manhattan, so it serves as a major gateway to both New Jersey and New York City. Every year, more than 33 million passengers fly into Newark Liberty on 40 US and international carriers. London-Heathrow is the main overseas destination followed by Tel Aviv, Frankfurt, Toronto, Paris, and Munich. The busiest domestic route is to Orlando, followed by Chicago, Houston, Fort Lauderdale, and Atlanta. United Airlines operates the bulk of the flights to Newark, with dozens of routes around America and the world.
There are three passenger terminals, each devoted to specific airlines. All three offer dozens of choices for food, drinks and shopping before and after security. There are banking and currency exchange services throughout the airport, along with wireless internet coverage. Passengers who need to sleepover can book a room at the Newark Liberty Marriott, located directly inside the airport.
Ground transportation includes both public and private options, with full information available at the Port Authority Welcome Center in the Arrivals area. Taxis, limousines and shared shuttles are the most common choices though there are also six major car rental companies on site for travelers who prefer to drive themselves. Quick and easy transportation into Newark, Manhattan, Philadelphia, and other regional destinations is possible on the AirTrain. The airport is located right off the New Jersey Turnpike for convenient driving anywhere in the state.
Atlantic City International Airport
New Jersey’s other major airport is located about 10 miles north of Atlantic City, the state’s top travel destination. Around 1.4 million passengers fly here every year, primarily to gamble or head to the beaches. Spirit Airlines is the only carrier operating regular year-round flights into Atlantic City from domestic cities. This airport is useful for travel between small regional destinations along the eastern seaboard.
The main routes are to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, followed by Fort Meyers (Florida), Myrtle Beach (South Carolina), Atlanta, Tampa, and Boston. A single terminal handles all flights and features a couple of cafés and a Hudson News gift shop. Wireless internet is available throughout the airport. Ground transportation is entirely by taxis, limousines and airport shuttles, but most casinos offer complimentary shuttle pick ups for their guests.
