Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
Regularly trading off the #1 spot with Chicago’s O’Hare, Atlanta is currently home to the world’s largest and busiest airport. Each year, more than 89 million travelers pass through Hartsfield-Jackson, which is located 10 miles south of downtown Atlanta, Georgia. Nearly 200 direct flights connect Atlanta to the rest of America, mainly to Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, New York, and Dallas. International flights run to every continent in the world, with Cancun the busiest route followed by Paris and Amsterdam. Most major global carriers have regular service to Georgia, and Delta uses the airport as its main base.
The airport is divided into domestic and international terminals that contain seven concourses. In between the two terminals is a large glass atrium with a Ground Transportation Center and numerous other facilities. All concourses are connected via an underground people mover, with a dedicated MARTA subway station in the atrium. Each concourse has a selection of eateries and shops, ATMs, banking services, and Wi-Fi covers most of the airport.
Many hotels in Atlanta, Georgia provide airport shuttles for their guests, but there are also shared shuttle vans, taxis, and limousines for door-to-door transport. Atlanta’s MARTA trains and buses run right from the terminal to downtown. There are also 13 car rental companies on site, including Avis, Hertz, and Thrifty. The airport is located off I-85 and I-75, about a 20 minute drive from downtown by car.
Savannah Hilton Head International Airport
Georgia’s second-busiest airport is located seven miles north of Savannah. It serves as a useful gateway to the coastal area, including Hilton Head, South Carolina, and the Golden Isles of Georgia. Around one million passengers travel through the airport annually, mainly on US Airways, Delta, United, and American. There is no international service here despite the airport’s name.
The terminal has a small food court with several eateries, a handful of sundry shops and services like a post office and ATMs and Wi-Fi internet is available throughout the terminal. Taxis, shared shuttles, and hotel courtesy shuttles are the main forms of transportation from the airport. Taxis use a fixed fare system to all the major destinations in the region. Car rental companies such as Budget, Enterprise, and Thrifty are located within the confines. Interstate 95 is adjacent to the airport, allowing for an easy 15 minute drive to Savannah or the Golden Isles in 30 minutes.
