As part of Spain, Lanzarote falls under the Schengen Agreement. This means American travelers do not need to obtain a visa to enter the island, or any Schengen nation for that matter. Travelers can stay for a period of 90 days if they are from the United States. For more information, visit http://travel.state.gov/visa/.

Health and Safety

When it comes to crime, Lanzarote is a very safe island. However, theft on the more crowded beaches and tourist-heavy areas is not uncommon. In cities like Arrecife, pickpockets are also found, so take care of your belongings, avoid flashing expensive items around, and remain vigilant when sightseeing. There are police stations around town, so visitors are never far away from help if needed.

The intense sunshine in Lanzarote is sometimes experienced for 10 hours each day, and with most activities taking place outdoors, visitors are always at risk of heat-related illnesses. Wear protective clothing including long-sleeve shirts, sunglasses and a hat. Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water, as the dry air means bodily fluids can be depleted very quickly.
