Balearic Islands Taxis and Car Rental

Car rental is the best idea for holidaymakers who prefer to combine lazy days on the beach with sightseeing around their chosen island. Although there are bus services linking the popular destinations and taxis are plentiful, if pricey, self-drive gives the freedom to roam, and it’s essential for searching out remote, deserted beaches and off-the-beaten-path villages. Rental cars can be booked in advance online, at ports or airports, or in the main towns from local companies.

Taxis can be booked or flagged down at any time day or night, and taxi stands are scattered around every major tourist area. All are metered, and rates are set at government level, leaving little or no room for scams as long as visitors take a registered cab. RadioTaxi Ibiza (+34-97-139-8433) serves the party island of Ibiza and TaxiPolensa (+34-97-186-6213) serves Mallorca.

Ferries are as useful for getting to the islands from mainland Spain’s ports at Valencia and Barcelona as they are for getting around the islands after arrival. For travel from the mainland, there’s the choice of super or high-speed craft, with journeys of eight hours or less. Inter-island ferries run from Mallorca’s Palma de Mallorca to Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera.

Balearic Islands Trains and Buses

Although Mallorca boasts two train lines, one from Palma to Sa Pobla and Manacor and the other, the famous Soller Vintage Train, from Palma to Soller, getting around by bus is far more practical. Extensive bus routes run to and from all the main tourist areas on Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca, and Formentera, and the central areas of town are especially well covered, but remote rural areas remain sparse. Most of the buses are air-conditioned and modern, and trips are inexpensive. Visitors should carefully check timetables and routes as they are subject to frequent changes.
