Brunei Darussalam — Transportation
Brunei Taxis and Car Rental
Very few taxis operate in Brunei because of the high cost of usage and ownership. It can be challenging to find cabs along the road, especially during peak hours in the morning and afternoon. If you wish to travel by taxi, make prior arrangements through your hotel. They are readily available and waiting at the airport for hotel transfers.
Getting around in Brunei by car is more practical, especially for families. Locals are not as reckless as the stereotypical Southeast Asian drivers, so driving is relatively safe and convenient. You can rent a car from Hertz and Avis at the airport, but booking in advance is a must.
Brunei Water Taxis
Water taxis connect Bandar Seri Begawan to Bangar and Temburong. They can be flagged down at most docks, but the best place to find them is at the canal market or behind Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkia. Water taxis are a great option for transportation especially at night and
it is possible to hire a personal one by the hour.
Brunei Trains and Buses
Rail travel is exclusive and not available to the public, so to commute, Bruneians and tourists rely on buses. The local bus system in Bandar Seri Begawan is efficient, and fares are affordable. All depart from the terminal in Jalan Cator and look like large purple vans that seat a maximum of 20 passengers. They are generally comfortable and clean, but stop running by 6:00 p.m. so make alternate plans at night.
