Getting There By Air

Main Airports

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) (www.phl.org) is 13km (8 miles) southwest of the city (journey time - 25 minutes). To/from the airport: The cheapest way to reach the city center is the SEPTA Airport Express Train. Taxis are also available. Facilities: Bank, car hire and post office.

Greater Pittsburgh Airport (PIT) (www.pitairport.com) is 22.5km (14 miles) west of the city center. To/from the airport: Port Authority Transit public buses run to Oakland via Robinson and downtown Pittsburgh. The Airlines Transportation shuttle runs to downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland. Taxis are also available. Facilities: Bank, car hire and post office.

Getting There By Water

Main ports: Pennsylvania has three of the country's busiest ports within its borders. Philadelphia (www.philaport.com) is the largest freshwater port in the world. Erie (www.porterie.org) is one of the major Great Lakes ports and Pittsburgh (www.port.pittsburgh.pa.us) is one of the nation's largest inland ports, providing access to the extensive 1,400km (900-mile) USA inland waterway system.

Getting There By Rail

Pennsylvania has dozens of passenger railroads (www.parailways.com) in addition to mainline Amtrak (tel: 1 800 872 7245, in the USA only; www.amtrak.com) services. Philadelphia is home to one of Amtrak's busiest stations, at 30th Street, which is served by the ‘Acela Express' service linking Washington, DC (journey time - 1 hour 35 minutes) with New York City (journey time - 1 hour) and Boston (journey time - 5 hours). Free transfers to the urban transportation system, run by SEPTA, are available to Amtrak passengers (request upon ticket purchase). Pittsburgh has daily Amtrak services to Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC.
