Language

English is the main language spoken in Maine. Visitors may encounter a mild New England accent, but it isn’t heavy enough to create any communication problems.

Currency

The US dollar (US $) is the currency used in Maine. Banknotes come in denominations of US $1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100. There are 100 cents in US $1, with coins available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, and 25 cents. Due to the rural nature of Maine, it may be difficult to find banks that can exchange foreign currency in the small towns. Travelers’ checks can be cashed in at most banks, however, and credit cards like Visa and MasterCard are accepted at most businesses. ATMs are found in every town, usually at large stores, gas stations, or in bank lobbies.

Time

Maine is in the Eastern Time Zone (GMT -5 or GMT -4 during March 12 to November 4 daylight savings).

Electricity

Maine, and the rest of the United States, uses electricity at 110-120V, 60Hz. Flat, two-prong plugs are typical, so it is suggested to bring a universal plug adapter if you are traveling from Europe, the UK, or Asia.

Communications

The dialing code for the United States is +1. Maine has a single area code (207) that covers the entire state. Mobile phone coverage can be spotty in the remote woodlands and coastal areas. But along roads and in most towns, there is good coverage. Internet cafés are only common in Portland, though Wi-Fi hotspots can be found in most towns that have a tourism sector. Try coffee shops and libraries for internet access.

Duty-free

Visitors over the age of 18 and entering the US are allowed to carry one liter of alcohol, 200 cigarettes (or 50 non-Cuban cigars or two kilograms of tobacco), and gifts with a value of up to US$400 without paying any duty.
