Getting There By Air

Main Airports

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL) (www.atlanta-airport.com) is 16km (10 miles) south of the city (journey time - 20 minutes). To/from the airport: The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transport Authority (MARTA) operates rapid rail services from the airport to the city center (journey time - 15 minutes) and throughout the metropolitan area. Taxis, shuttle vans and limousines are also available. Facilities: Business center, car hire and currency exchange.

Getting There By Rail

The Amtrak (tel: 1 800 872 7245, in the USA only; www.amtrak.com) 'Crescent' service, linking New York City with New Orleans, stops in Atlanta, while the ‘Silver Service/Palmetto' service between New York City and Miami stops in Savannah. Bus 23 runs to the Amtrak station in Atlanta, 1688 Peachtree Street; a taxi is required to get to the Amtrak station in Savannah, which is situated some 5km (3 miles) southwest of the city, at 2611 Seaboard Coastline Drive.

Approximate bus journey times:
From Atlanta to Chattanooga is around 2 hours and 15 minutes, to Mobile is 6 to 8 hours, to St Petersburg is 12 to 14 hours.

Getting There By Road

Greyhound (tel: 1 800 231 2222, in the USA only; www.greyhound.com) has terminals in Atlanta, Hapeville, Marietta and Norcross.

Approximate driving times:
From Atlanta to Dallas is 6 hours, to New Orleans is 9 hours, and to Seattle is 53 hours.

Amtrak trains run through Georgia and the Georgia railways cover the state.

Getting Around By Road

The best way to get around Georgia is by car, which means you can take in the state’s natural beauty and diversity in your own time.

Bus: Atlanta bus services do offer links to other cities in the city, and there are frequent daily departures along the coast and to Savannah.

Getting Around Towns and Cities

Public transportation is good in the major cities. Thanks to Atlanta’s size, there are reliable MARTA rapid-rail subway trains and plenty of taxis. Savannah’s historic neighborhoods are best explored on foot.
