New Brunswick — Transportation
New Brunswick Taxis and Car Rental
Moncton, Saint John, Fredericton, and other sizeable New Brunswick communities have reliable taxi service. White Cab Company Limited (+1-506-857-3000) ranks among Moncton’s oldest companies, while Hybrid Taxi (+1-506-693-3030) boasts Saint John’s newest cabs. Car rental is New Brunswick’s most practical means of transportation due to the province’s relatively small size and lack of public transit outside major areas. Although motorists can easily drive to other Maritime provinces and even to the American state of Maine from New Brunswick, they should ensure their vehicles have required permission to drive outside the province ahead of time.
New Brunswick Ferries
Saint John is New Brunswick’s main ferry hub, offering regular service to and from Grand Manan and several other small Bay of Fundy coastal communities. Bay Ferries regularly operates service between Saint John and the Nova Scotia community of Digby.
New Brunswick Trains and Buses
Saint John, Moncton, and Fredericton are the only New Brunswick cities with reliable city bus systems. Saint John’s inter-city buses operate between 6:00 a.m. and midnight, while Fredericton’s 28 buses travel along nine different routes between Monday and Saturday. Moncton’s Codiac Transit operates seven days a week with an express bus making regular 15-minute runs between the Northwest Centre and Champlain Place, but service is limited on Sundays.
Acadian Lines Bus Service, New Brunswick’s main inter-city bus line, stops at seemingly all of the province’s small villages along their routes. Buses regularly depart to Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and westward to Fredericton and Saint John from Moncton Bus Terminal.
VIA Rail’s eastern Canadian route makes several New Brunswick stops during its journey between Halifax and Montréal, but only one train stops in each direction per day, so passengers must be careful not to miss their connection. A wide variety of rooms and berths are available aboard VIA Rail trains.
