Turkmenistan — Airports
Ashgabat International Airport
This is the main international airport in Turkmenistan, at the capital city, Ashgabat. There are a few international flights, although the furthest destinations served are Britain to the west and Beijing to the east. Turkmenistan Airlines flies from London-Heathrow and Beijing, as well as from destinations in Russia and Central Asia. A popular connection is from Dubai, served by Turkmenistan Airlines and FlyDubai. Lufthansa flies from Frankfurt in Germany. Turkmenistan Airlines is the only provider of domestic routes, flying to Dashoguz, Mary, Turkmenabat, and Turkmenbashi.
The airport opened in 1994 and has modern and adequate passenger facilities, including a duty-free store. However, it sees more domestic flights than it does international flights. The airport is located around six miles north of downtown Ashgabat, with the journey between the airport and the city taking about 15 minutes. Taxis are available to take you to your hotel; however, they are unlicensed and privately owned. Fares are cheap due to extremely low gasoline prices. There are no rental car agencies located at the airport.
Other Airports in Turkmenistan
There are four other domestic airports in Turkmenistan, at Dashoguz, Mary, Turkmenbashi, and Turkmenbat. All routes are served by Turkmenistan Airlines. Flying around the country is cost effective since fuel prices are very low, and in turn so are the air fares. Domestic flights are frequent: there are six daily flights between Ashgabat and Dashogus, three between Ashgabat and Mary, three between Ashgabat and Turkmenbashi, and five between Ashgabat and Turkmenbat.
