Cyprus — Shopping and Leisure
Shopping in Cyprus is great fun, whether it’s wandering the markets and small shops in the Old Town or hitting the main shopping district at sale time. Cyprus is known for its handicrafts, and the intricate, embroidered lacework from Lefkara are favorite souvenirs. Other great buys include leather goods, silver, jewelry, copper, woven baskets and ceramics. Cyprus’s olive oils have a distinct flavor, great for salads, and the sweet, dessert wines and local brandies are a great reminder of your relaxed evenings on the beach.
Makarios Avenue is Nicosia’s main shopping street, with malls, high end brands and boutiques. In the Old Town, Ledra Street is mostly pedestrianized, with everything from antiques, arts and crafts, gold and silver, quirky mom and pop shops and stylish shoes. In the northern half of the city, Turkish rugs, textiles and pottery are popular gifts. Nicosia is home to several street markets, great for bargains galore and people-watching.
Paphos is a shopaholic’s dream, crammed with stores, bazaars and shopping streets, open late in the vacation season and mostly set in the district around Makarios III Avenue. Retail therapy is especially good for glitzy footwear and unique fashion finds. At the end of the avenue is an open-air market where haggling is essential to get the best price. If you’re looking for upscale souvenirs in Cyprus, the on-site gift shops in the major hotels won’t disappoint.
