Armenia — Transportation
Armenia Taxis and Car Rental
There are several taxi companies operating in the city centers of Armenia and they are relatively cheap compared to international standards. While most taxis can be flagged down on the side of the road, there are a number of reputable companies which taxis can be pre-booked including BF Express LTD (+374-10-580-680) and Aerotaxi (+374-55-319-050). Taxis are not metered so it is important that rates are negotiated upon before the journey. Car rental agencies can be found at the airports in Yerevan and Gyumri, with the major companies of Sixt, Hertz ad Europcar offering the best deals. Road quality is generally good in the cities, but starts to deteriorate moving further north to places like Dilijan.
Armenia Trains and Buses
Traveling in Armenia is best done by bus. Buses are probably the most inexpensive and efficient way to get between cities. Travelers have their choice of normal buses or minibuses, which are generally faster and come more frequently. Both types of vehicle connect almost all major downtowns to their surrounding villages and to the largest center of Yerevan, as well. While larger buses have scheduled departure and arrival times, the 14-seat minibuses will only leave once enough passengers have boarded and can thus get quite crowded. There are no tickets for these minibuses; commuters pay the driver directly.
Buses are great for inner city transport as well, operating in much the same manner as inter city vehicles. The inner city networks are extensive, with over 100 routes in Yerevan alone.
The train network in Armenia is not well established and cars are generally badly maintained. The one exception is the subway in Yerevan which is a nifty way of navigating the city, but the trains between Gyumri, Sevan and Vanadzor are unreliable and overcrowded.
