It has never been easier to travel to or around Tibet by air, rail, or road. Most commercial flights enter at Lhasa Gonggar Airport, which is located about 50 kms from the capital and offers flights to Hong Kong, Kathmandu, and about 10 cities throughout China.
The Sichuan city of Chengdu is the best flight departure point for Tibet for avoiding the altitude sickness that many visitors suffer after entering from less mountainous regions. Visitors may also gradually acclimate to the higher altitude by flying in to Lhasa from Zhongdian after following the Yunnan tourist trail.
