Channel Islands — Transportation
Channel Islands Taxis and Car Rental
Taxi transportation on Guernsey and Jersey gives good value for money and is well-organized into two sectors: controlled taxis with a yellow sign on their roofs and restricted cabs with white roof signs displaying the name of their company. Controlled taxis can be found at ranks at airports, along the harbors, and in various town locations on the Channel Islands. Restricted cabs pick up passengers at their hotels and other venues via a phone booking. Four fixed tariff rates apply, depending on the travel time and distance, but extra charges may be made for waiting. ABC Cabs (+44-153-452-5015) and Arrow Luxicabs (+44-153-488-7000) offer 24-hour service and wheelchair-adapted cabs.
For visitors to the two larger islands of Guernsey and Jersey, car rental is the best way to see the sights. Roads are good, but winding with a low overall speed limit that encourages safety, and local drivers know their stuff. Drivers need to be 21 years old or more, and must not have had a serious motor vehicle offense or drunk driving conviction for at least the five years before renting a vehicle. Reputable firms such as Avis and Hertz have stands at the airports and offices in towns.
Channel Islands Water Taxis
Catamarans and small boats provide ferry links between all the islands at St Helier and St Peter Port’s harbors, and Condor Ferries and Manche Iles Express car ferries run from the English mainland ports at Weymouth, Poole, and Portsmouth to St Peter Port, Guernsey. Ferries also run to St Peter Port from France’s St Malo, and seasonally from Dielette and Granville.
Channel Islands Trains and Buses
There are no trains on the Channel Islands, and Sark and Herm disallow all motorized vehicles. Jersey’s MyBus offers red, blue, and green routes covering all the sites of interest on one ticket, and Guernsey’s municipal BusesGG takes visitors to all the key visitor spots. Bus fare is inexpensive.
