Russia — Airports

Domodedovo International Airport

Moscow has three airports, with Domodedovo the largest and the main arrivals hub for visitors to Russia. Located 26 miles southeast of the city, the complex handles more than 25 million passengers a year at its single terminal, which is divided into domestic and international concourses. Transaero and S7 Airlines offer the most flights with domestic routes and international flights to Europe, the US and resort destinations.

Transaero is the main carrier from the USA, with connections via New York, Los Angeles, and Miami. The airline also flies to London Heathrow, along with British Airways. Other full-service carriers include Singapore Airlines, Thai Air, JAL, Cathay Pacific, Austrian, and Aeroflot. The terminal offers ATMs, currency exchange, facilities for families and the disabled, business lounges, car rental, and a good choice of retail shops, duty-free stores, coffee shops, bars, and restaurants. Onward transportation is via Aeroexpress train, bus, taxi, or limo.

Pulkovo International Airport

St Petersburg is served by Pulkova International Airport, with its domestic and international terminals located 11 and 12 miles from the city. Annual passenger throughput totals around 10 million, with Terminal 2, reconstructed in 2003, handling all international flights. The facility is a hub for Aeroflot, its main carrier, which offers American travelers connections through a variety of major European hubs, as there are no direct US flights to St Petersburg, Russia.

UK travelers are better served, with British Airways offering routes to and from London Heathrow, and Aeroflot linking with London Gatwick. Air France flies to Paris, Alitalia to Rome, Iberia to Madrid and KLM to Amsterdam. For visitors planning to travel around the vast country by air, domestic flights from Terminal 1 cover a wide number of destinations at a reasonable cost. The terminals offer ATMs, banking and currency exchange, VIP and business lounges, mother and child rooms, facilities for the disabled, bars, coffee shops, eateries, duty-free shopping, and car rental. Transportation options include city bus, taxi, or airport shuttle.
