Podgorica Airport

The larger of Montenegro’s two public airports, Podgorica Airport is located seven miles from the capital and is the hub for national flagship carrier Montenegro Airlines. The the country’s second public airport, Tivat, is only 50 miles away so there are no domestic flights in the country, with Podgorica serving only international destinations. Its terminal is almost new, opened in 2006 to aid the increasing number of visitors now over 600,000 a year, and the complex’s main runway shares its facilities with the nearby Military Air Base.

International flights are offered only run to European destinations, meaning travelers from the US will need to connect in a hub such as London, Paris, Rome or Frankfurt. UK visitors are slightly better served with a Montenegro Airlines flight from London’s Gatwick Airport. Other options include Adria Airlines from Ljubljana, Austrian Airlines from Vienna, Croatia Airlines from Zagreb, Jet Airlines from Belgrade, and Turkish Airlines from Istanbul. Montenegro Airlines serves Copenhagen, Frankfurt, London, Moscow, Paris, Rome, Vienna and Zurich.

The new glass and aluminum terminal provides the usual traveler comforts and amenities including coffee shops, two news stands, car rental, a bank, currency exchange, and ATMs. There is assistance for special needs passengers, a nursery with baby-changing tables and a duty-free outlet in the departures lounge. Ground transportation is by taxi, hotel shuttle or rental car. Cabs may offer to take you to the beach resorts, but fares are astronomical.

Tivat Airport

Tivat Airport lies just two miles from Tivat city, and has a passenger throughput of over 600,000 a year, most of whom arrive in the summer season for a stay at one of the nearby beach resorts such as Budva, just 12 miles from the airport. The vast majority of fights into Tivat are seasonal vacation charters, with only a few full-service commercial routes to Europe and none to the USA. American travelers can connect in Paris or London Gatwick via Montenegro Airlines. Almost all the seasonal charters arrive from northern European countries including Russia.

Tivat Airport’s new terminal offers the usual passenger facilities including car rental, parking, a bank, currency exchange, ATMs, a tourist agency, retail and duty-free stores, and a coffee shop/restaurant. Assistance for the disabled and baby facilities are available, and onward transportation is by taxi, airport shuttle, rental car, or bus.
