Skopje Alexander the Great International Airport

Located 11 miles from the capital, Skopje International Airport is the larger and busier of Macedonia’s two air hubs. Its terminal is brand new, having reopened in 2011 along with a runway extension, parking facilities and administrative buildings, bringing the complex’s capacity to four million people a year. An adjacent five-star hotel is in the planning stages.

Currently there are no direct flights from the US to Skopje, with American visitors forced to connect at a major European hub such as Vienna, Zurich, Dusseldorf, Rome, or Brussels. UK visitors fare only slightly better, with Wizzair offering one flight to Skopje from London’s Luton Airport. Seasonal flights to Ohrid on Jat Airways and Jetfly are available, while charters arrive from Amsterdam on Arkefly and Palma de Mallorca with Air Europa.

The comfortable new terminal offers banking, currency exchange and ATM services, Wi-Fi internet, an information desk, disablity support, and extended long and short-term parking. Its first class and business lounges are its pride and joy, with privileged travelers enjoying upscale facilities. A café, pub and snack bar cater to snack attacks and duty free and other stores are available. Transportation from the airport is by bus, taxi or rental car from desks in the Arrivals lounge.

Orhid St Paul the Apostle Airport

The second of Macedonia’s airports, Ohrid lies six miles from the city and a two hour journey by bus from Skopje. Its facilities including a single terminal have been recently modernized and can handle up to 400,000 passengers a year. At the present, it only hosts seasonal flights to Skopje, Belgrade, Moscow, Amsterdam, Eindhoven, and Zurich. Facilities include a VIP lounge, duty-free shop, an information desk, a bar, restaurant, ATMs, a general shop, Wi-Fi internet access, car rental and parking. Transportation is by bus, car, taxi or hotel shuttle.
