El Salvador International Airport

El Salvador International Airport, often called Comalapa International Airport, is the main airport of El Salvador, located to the east of the capital in Ilopango. Overseas flights mainly come from the US and Canada, including LA with American and Delta, and Chicago, New York and Toronto on local airline TACA. Visitors from the UK and the rest of Europe will need to connect through the US.

The airport serves around two million passengers a year and has a good range of duty-free shops and other stores including a Radio Shack. There’s also a good supply of restaurants with local and international foods available, including a Pizza Hut. Currency exchange and ATMs are also on hand and accept foreign cards.

Taxis are readily available and take about 40 minutes to reach downtown San Salvador and the main hotels. Cheaper minibuses are another option or some of the big hotels provide courtesy shuttles. Car rental is with Alamo and Budget, and the drive to the city proceeds west along Bulevar del Ejercito Nacional.
