Caribbean, the Caribbean Sea, more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays - the West Indies by Patrick Nouhailler via Flickr Creative Commons

Language

Both English and Dutch are the two main languages spoken on the island. However, Dutch is the official language. Schools use both languages to teach the local curriculum.

Currency

US dollars is the currency used throughout Saba. It is advised that tourists bring US dollars to the island with them rather than another currency or travelers’ checks, as the exchange rate is poor in Saba. MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted by hotels, some restaurants, and airlines. ATMs are not ubiquitous as they are only found in Windwardside and The Bottom. Banking hours on the island begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. However, there are only three banks operating on Saba.

Time

Saba falls within the Atlantic Standard Time zone, which is four hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC -4).

Electricity

Saba electricity comes at 220-240 Volts, which means North American travelers will need to bring a converter if they want to use American appliances here. European-style plugs are used in Saba, which are designed with two round pins. Therefore an adapter is also required by US travelers wishing to use appliances from home here.

Communications

+599 is the international dialing code for the islands of the Netherlands Antilles. However, to reach Saba, this code needs to be followed by 4 and then the local number. Phone networks on the island are operated by several companies, including Windward Cellular Network and East Caribbean Cellular. Phone booths can be found in the four main communities, and most resorts and hotels provide international long-distance calling services. The local post office is located at The Bottom, and Windwardside is the only destination that has an internet café. Most large hotels have internet connection.

Duty-free

Passengers must be 15 years or over to carry duty-free items into Saba. However, there are some restrictions. For tobacco products, passengers can bring in 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars. Alternatively, 250 grams of tobacco may be brought into Saba. When it comes to alcoholic beverages, two liters may be imported without paying duty.
