Martinique Taxis and Car Rental

Taxis are readily available from Fort de France and the airport to places around Martinique. They do not come cheap, and fares are further increased between 8 pm and 6 am, all day on Sunday, and public holidays, with a 40 percent surcharge. Cabs are available 24 hours a day via Radio Taxis (0596-631-010) or Martinique Taxi (0596-636-362).

Considering the high standards of the road network, renting a car is a great way to get around and see the beauty of Martinique. You can rent vehicles from Avis (+11-596-421-100), Budget (+11-596-636-362) or  Hertz (+11-590-892-805), who all have offices at the airport in Fort de France and other popular locations.

Martinique Water Taxis

There is a shuttle boat which runs between Fort de France, Trois-Ilets and Pointe du Bout. The journey takes about 30 minutes to Trois-Ilets, and slightly less to Pointe du Bout, which is a pleasant way to see the bay, while also avoiding road traffic. There are three companies that offer the service: Somatours Vedettes (+11-590-730-553) runs the Fort de France to Pointe du Bout route daily between 6:30 a.m. and 5:15 p.m, departing every hour. Also running the Pointe du Bout route is Vedettes Madinna (+11-590-630-646) from 6:20 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. every day. For Trois-Ilets, Matinik Cruise line run a scheduled ferry departing every 75 minutes between 6:10 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. There is no service on Sundays.

Martinique Trains and Buses

No rail network exists in Martinique. There are some large public buses, although most are mini-vans marked "TC," which stands for Taxi Collectifs (collective taxis). Destinations are marked on a board displayed in the front window. The bus depot in Fort de France is located in Pointe Simon just west of the harbor, and other bus stops are marked with "arret autobus" and normally consist of a blue square with a picture of a white bus. There are no schedules and buses run on demand, usually only departing when full in capacity. Buses run early in the morning and usually end aroudn  6:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Services on Sundays is extremely limited.
