Solomons Islands by ILO in Asia and the Pacific

Shopping in the Solomon Islands is an experience in itself. There are no major shopping malls of note, so tourists won’t find world-renowned fashion brands when exploring the shopping sites of the archipelago. Nevertheless, those tourists who are into collecting will have such a wonderful time experiencing the shopping culture of the Solomon Islands. Most of the shops and markets across the archipelago open from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. On Saturdays, opening times are from 8:00 a.m. through to midday. The main products for sale on the islands include mother-of-pearl carvings, shells, basket-ware, wooden carvings, and intricate jewelry.

Honiara

The main shopping area in Honiara is the Central Market. This is the largest marketplace in the Solomon Islands, so tourists will certainly have an adventurous time just experiencing this thriving destination. Yes, the market does have a wide range of food on offer, including fresh fruits, vegetables, and local meats. However, there is also a great range of handicrafts available. Mother-of-pearl carvings are tremendously popular. Their decorative designs make perfect souvenirs for family back home, or ideal pick-ups for collectors. Local jewelry, which is sometimes made from former shell money, is also worth the trip to Honiara.

Malaita

In Malaita Province, especially in the town of Auki, markets are available too. Tourists will find plenty of similar items to Honiara when they shop at Malaita. However, this area is famous for its shell necklaces. The main market area is a dynamic bastion of life most days of the week. Visitors will have a marvelous time exploring the many items on sale. In addition to necklaces, jewelry in Malaita can also be found in the form of bracelets, earrings, nose rings, pendants, and finger rings. Prices are relatively inexpensive, so tourists are guaranteed a long day of shopping if they are up for it!
