Zambia — Things to Do

The national parks in Zambia set the stage for the most important things to do in a South African country that houses some of the most prized safari destinations on the continent. Lower Zambezi National Park gives fishing enthusiasts a chance to make a catch in the Zambezi River, while bird-watchers will enjoy Blue Lagoon National Park. Guided walks are also offered at South Luangwa National Park.

Adventurists will not be out of things to keep them busy in Zambia. Livingstone is known as the extreme sports capital of the country, offering adrenaline junkies the opportunity to go bungee jumping, body boarding and gorge swinging. The rapids south of Victoria Falls are ideal for whitewater rafters, while those looking for something calmer can opt for a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River. To get up close to the falls, try a micro flight ride or jump in a helicopter for spectacular aerial views.

The River Safari Company is a reputable company that specializes in safari tours of the incredible South Luangwa National Park. Visitors can choose between three, four and five-day overnight trips or customize a package to suit their needs. Those that wish to go independently can rent a 4x4 from The Personal Touch Ltd in Mfuwe, Zambia.

Guided walking tours through Kafue National Park are available with Eyes on Africa Travel & Safari, an American company that is run by nature-loving South Africans. If you would prefer a local operator, try Bush Buzz.

Bird lovers flock to Lochinvar National Park to catch sight of some of the Zambia’s rarest species. Expert Africa offers bird watching trips through the park, which houses over 400 different types of feathered friends.

River Horse Canoeing specializes in fishing expeditions along the Zambezi River, which is famous for its big game, in particular the tiger fish. Trips are led by canoe, while multi-day boat safaris are available for those that want to get the true Zambian River experience.

Global Descents* leads five day whitewater rafting trips down the Zambezi River, near Victoria Falls in Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park. To enjoy the rapids in just one afternoon, Bundu Adventures can show you the way.

To really get your adrenaline pumping, try bungee jumping off the Victoria Falls Bridge. With breathtaking views of the pummeling water, look death in the eye as as you free fall for a matter of seconds. For longer glances, try the thrilling Jet Extreme 30-minute boat trip to the gorge of the falls. Both of these activities are offered by Safari Par Excellence.

For aerial views of Victoria Falls, Botaka Gorge, and the Zambezi River, a memorable helicopter ride can be organized through Livingstone’s Adventure, which offers 15 or 30-minute flights over this magnificent world wonder and the surrounding area of Zambia.
