Madagascar — Airports

Ivato International Airport

The air gateway to Madagascar is Ivato International Airport, located on the edge of the capital. It's currently in the middle of renovations to upgrade its runway and facilities to ge able to handle the Airbus A380.

There are no direct flights from the US, so Americans are advised to connect through Paris on Air France. Another option is via Johannesburg with Airlink. UK travelers can either pick up a connection to Ivato via Paris or take a direct flight from the UK on Eurostar. Air Madagascar is the major carrier of the country and offers flights from Bangkok, Johannesburg, Mauritius, Nairobi and Paris, while Air Austral flies from Saint Denis de la Reunion. A Kenya Airways trip covers Nairobi and Air Mauritius flies from its home island. Private charter flights can be booked to several remote airstrips.

Facilities in the terminal include a bank, ATMs, currency exchange, a restaurant in each terminal, and another adjacent to the parking lot. An Air France lounge is available, as is a duty-free outlet for international travelers. Onward transportation is by licensed taxi, with visitors advised to avoid the unlicensed cabs. A regular airport shuttle drops passengers off at their hotel, or rental cars and private vehicle transportation can be arranged in advance at the airport. If you're taking a taxi, watch out for overcharging which is a common problem. Be sure to agree on a fee before departing.

Fascene Airport

Nosy Be Island’s tiny airport of Fascene lies on the northern tip of Madagascar and offers seasonal flights on Air Italy from Milan Malpensa and Rome. Air Madagascar flies from Tana, Antisiranana and Johannesburg, Neos has charters from Rome and Mombasa and Air Austral have trips from Dzaoudi. If you’re vacationing on the island, connecting in Rome or Milan saves a trip from Tana after your arrival in Madagascar. Facilities at Fascene Airport are basic, and include currency exchange and onward transportation via hotel shuttle or taxi. Nosy Be’s airport also operates regular flights to Ambanja Airport in the north of the country.
