Tour Overview
The real beginnings of southern Italy are found in this sought-after region of natural and historic delights, which the Romans rightly named the 'happy land' (felix ager). Home to the legendary pizza, the fascinating city of Naples is close to the stunning sites of Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii. Across the Sorrento Peninsula is the Amalfi Coast, one of the most dramatic and beautiful coastlines in Europe, with its towering cliffs, picturesque coves and delightful towns. From our comfortable family-run hotel on the beach of Marina del Cantone, we can easily visit the famous island of Capri. There is, of course, plenty of time to sample the wonderful food and enjoy the Mediterranean climate by the beach.
Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1Start at Naples hotel.
Day 2
In the morning, we explore the largest city of the region and the most important trading port for southern Italy. Naples has been influenced by many different cultures, most notably the Greeks who left their mark on the layout of the historical centre and constructed an underground aqueduct, through which you can walk. The Castle dell'Ovo (Egg Castle), built in the 6th century BC introduced a mediaeval legend that if the egg hidden in the castle is ever dropped then the entire city will fall to ruin. The afternoon is free to visit the Science or War museums or simply relax in the historical centre of this charismatic city. In the evening, we enjoy an authentic pizza in a Napoletan restaurant.
Day 3
Today we visit the famous volcano that looms over the million inhabitants of Naples, Mt Vesuvius. For those who would like, you can take a guided walk by a specialist Volcano guide to see the incredible woodland that continues to grow in such harsh conditions (optional). We drive onto Pompeii, which was buried in 79AD by a giant mudslide, triggered by the eruption of Mt Vesuvius. The perfectly presented remains give us an amazing insight into the life of a Roman city. Finally we transfer to our beachside hotel in Marina del Cantone, where we spend the remainder of the week.
Day 4
After breakfast, we board the boat to Capri, a short journey with stunning views of the Amalfi Coast. The time spent on Capri is unguided and you are free to explore the island on foot, by boat or the chairlift, from which you will be able to see the entire island (all optional). A beautiful walk will take you up to Capri town and along a network of small pedestrianised streets to visit the remains of Villa Jovis, the former home of the fearsome Roman emperor Tiberius. There is also time for a boat tour around the island's grottos, including the famous Blue Grotto, and then under the natural arch, where you will be able to take a swim in the beautiful blue waters.
Day 5
A free day to relax by the beach, visit the narrow winding streets of Sorrento, enjoy the coastal views from Positano or choose from a variety of unguided walks (all optional).
Day 6
Beautiful morning walk to Jeranto; free afternoon for swimming or snorkelling.
Day 7
We travel by bus to the largest town on the coast, Amalfi, which was popular with the British upper classes in Edwardian times. The large Duomo dominates the town with its bright coloured tiles so typical of the region. Continuing on by bus, we climb to the romantic town of Ravello and the best views of the coastline. Ravello also has the ubiquitous Duomo but the Villa Cimbrone and Villa Ruffolo are the real highlights. Set amidst formal gardens their balconies stand at the edge of the cliffs enjoying stunning views and were aptly described by Andre Gide as 'closer to the heavens than the sea'.
Day 8
End Marina del Cantone.
