Day 2: Dijon

This morning enjoy a walking tour in Dijon, the historical capital of Burgundy and visit the Old Town with its splendid half-timber houses. Burgundians are truly obsessed with good wine and food and there is nowhere better to experience this than the market where you can sample the wonderful local delicacies and produce. Continue to the impressive Fine Arts Museum, housed within the Palais des Ducs, to admire its collection of Flemish masters and treasures from the reign of the former Dukes of Burgundy.

This afternoon is at leisure to relax or explore the medieval town which surrounds the hill, with all it's charming shops and old streets.

Day 3: Dijon – Vézelay – Fontenay Abbey – Dijon

Today follow the footsteps of medieval pilgrims with a visit to the “sacred hill” at Vézelay.  This UNESCO world heritage site is best known for the basilica of Ste-Madeleine where Saint Bernard preached during the Second Crusade in 1146 and whose carved capitals are one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture in Europe.

This afternoon travel to Fontenay Abbey. Founded in the early 12th century by St. Bernard, Abbot of Clairvaux, this Cistercian monastery was consecrated by Pope Edward VII. From its heyday when it housed up to 300 monks, the abbey was sold during the French Revolution, and the buildings subsequently came to house a paper factory. It was not until the early 20th century that it was restored and opened to the public. This superb Romanesque complex is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Visitors to the site will be enchanted by the church, the chapter house, the cloisters and the host of other marvels in this exceptional conventual complex.

Day 4: Dijon – Beaune – Dijon

This morning travel to Beaune to visit the 15th Century hospice, known as the “Hotel-Dieu,” with its multi-colored roof tiles and its magnificent courtyard “Cour d’Honneur.” The hospice is also famous for housing two religious masterpieces: the wooden statue “Christ de Pitié” and the altar which holds Roger van de Weyden’s depiction of the Judgement Day.  Then continue on to the Maison Champy, the first wine house established in Burgundy in 1720, and enjoy a wine tasting. Return to your hotel for a free afternoon.
