Day 1

(Wednesday) - Depart for Rome, Italy:

Your adventure begins as you depart the USA on your trans-Atlantic flight. Overnight in flight

Day 2

(Thursday) - Arrive Rome:

Arrive in historic Rome, Italy. If you purchased airline tickets from YMT Vacations, a YMT representative will welcome you after you clear customs immigration, and then you will be transferred to your hotel. (If you made your own flight arrangements, please make your own way to the hotel.) This evening meet your fellow travelers and learn about the exciting days ahead, then relax over a tasty Italian dinner. (D)

Day 3

(Friday) - Rome Sightseeing:

Your full day sightseeing tour includes the highlights of this Eternal City, the Capital of Italy. The monuments and the city’s architecture serve as a wonderful reminder of Rome’s glorious past. Today’s sights include views of the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, the largest amphitheater ever built in the Roman Empire. We visit Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, home to intricate mosaics, and priceless art pieces. Explore the Piazza Navona, built on the ruins of the Domitian Circus (arena), the renowned Spanish Steps. Throw a coin into the fabled Trevi Fountain and make a wish to return. (B,D)

Day 4

(Saturday) - The Vatican Sightseeing:

This morning, we tour a city within Rome, the Papal City. Our guided tour explores the Vatican Museums, which houses some of the most important and valuable art treasures in the world. Visit the Sistine Chapel to view the floor-to-ceiling Biblical frescoes painted by Michelangelo, and St. Peter´s Basilica, built on the location of St. Peter’s crucifixion and burial. The afternoon is yours to discover more of Rome on your own. (B)

*Touring the Vatican Museums requires walking up several staircases and 2-3 hours of walking.

Day 5

(Sunday) - Pompeii to Sorrento:

After a leisurely morning drive south, we arrive in Pompeii. Though destroyed and covered in ash by the infamous eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, you can still see some of the artifacts of the cosmopolitan lifestyle that existed here during the height of the Roman Empire. Your guide will walk you through the most interesting ruins, making them come to life with the stories and legends that have been passed down through the centuries. Continue on a short drive to the Bay of Naples and your hotel in scenic Sorrento. (B,D)

Day 6

(Monday) - The Amalfi Coast:

Today we explore the gloriously picturesque Amalfi Coastal region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We drive along what seasoned travelers call the most spectacular road in Europe, enjoying the breathtaking panoramic views as we wind our way up the towering cliffs. The pink and white villas perched along the steep hillsides overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea make incredible photos. We stop at a few of the small, colorful and historic villages to take in the wonderful “la dolce vita” atmosphere. (B, D)

Day 7

(Tuesday) - Sorrento to Montecatini:

This morning we depart the Neapolitan coast and travel north through central Italy - into the picturesque Umbrian countryside, with its rolling hills and scenic vineyards. Drive through the Tiber River Valley, with its medieval villages including Orvieto. We continue north through the rich volcanic hills of the Tuscany region, and to the spa resort town of Montecatini Terme. (B,D)

Day 8

(Wednesday) - Florence Pisa Excursion:

Today’s full day excursion starts with a short drive to Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance. Our guided sightseeing tour visits the 13th century Duomo cathedral with the Brunelleschi dome and the marble clad baptistery. See Ghiberti’s golden “Gates of Paradise” doors at the Baptistery, the Piazza della Signoria and the Ponte Vecchio. Next, we travel west to Pisa, to see the 800-year old bell tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, an iconic symbol of Italy and as of April 2011, free of scaffolding for the first time in 20 years. Return to the hotel by late afternoon. (B)

Day 9

(Thursday) - Verona to Venice:

Travel through the lush northern Italian landscape as we drive to Verona. A city best know as the setting for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, it also offers wonderful examples of Medieval and Renaissance art and architecture. Our walking tour of this picturesque village includes the Cuomo, Piazza delle Erbe with the famous Torre dei Lamberti (high tower), and of course the house of Juliet, with its famous balcony. We continue towards the Adriatic Sea and Venice, arriving in the late afternoon. (B,D)

Day 11

(Saturday) - Venice to Salzburg, Austria:

Today we drive north, through the Trentino-Alto Adige region, transitioning us from the Mediterranean Italian to Bavarian Austrian culture. Watch the architecture change from the Italian to Tyrolean style as we traverse through the majestic Dolomite Mountains. Gothic onion-domed churches and vineyards dot the forested landscape. Skirting Slovenia, we cross into Austria and to the Alpine city of Salzburg, birthplace of famed composer Wolfgang Amadeus. (B,D)

Day 12

(Sunday) - Salzburg Sightseeing:

We start the day with a walking tour through Old Town Salzburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with picturesque Baroque architecture, including the 17th century Salzburg Cathedral and St. Peter’s Abbey. This afternoon we see the St. Michael’s Church - which you’ll recognize as the wedding chapel from the “Sound of Music” film, along with the Mirabell Gardens and its ornate fountain. View historic Hellbrunn Palace, a Baroque manor built in the early 1600s. (B)

Day 13

(Monday) - Melk Cruise the Danube to Vienna:

Today we drive across the alpine Austrian countryside to Melk, a small village that is home to the Benedictine Melk Abbey. Here we board our tour boat for an afternoon sightseeing cruise on the Danube River. We travel through the narrow Wachau Valley - spotting the ancient castles and hidden monasteries nestled between the steeply terraced vineyards. After cruising by the foothills of the Bohemian Massif and Dunkelsteiner Woods, we arrive at Krems, where we re-board our motorcoach and drive east to elegant Vienna, the capital of Austria. (B,D)

Day 14

(Tuesday) - Vienna Sightseeing:

This morning see the highlights of this cultural metropolis. We tour the massive Schönbrunn Palace complex; built by the Hapsburgs in an attempt to out-do France’s Versailles, today it is the most significant cultural monument in Austria. Visit St. Stephen’s Cathedral, built in 1147, its gigantic roof and tall tower make it the hallmark of Vienna’s city center. The afternoon is at leisure to explore this friendly city on your own. Tonight is a special treat as we enjoy a Farewell Dinner and folkloric show at the famed Heurigen Restaurant. (B,D)

Day 15

(Wednesday) - Depart Vienna for Home:
