Vincy Mas kicks off in St. Vincent at the end of June with the King & Queen of the bands, Junior Carnival, the Miss carnival show and calypso and steel band competitions. Then in July, the celebration continues with Carnival Monday, featuring J’ouvert – an early morning celebration – and Carnival’s Tuesday’s Mardi Gras parade.
Bequia Easter Regatta
The Bequia Easter Regatta features local double ender, model boat and yacht races – plus plenty of parties, concerts and celebrations. Celebrating its 30th year, the most recent regatta saw a total of 39 yachts and 28 local double enders turned out to race on a weekend of light but steady breezes and glorious sunshine.
In January, the Mustique Blues Festival attracts musicians from all across the Caribbean and travelers from around the world. Set at Basil’s Bar, Grammy nominees and Blues chart toppers make the trek out for two weeks of soul singing. A notable charity event, all proceeds are generously donated to the Basil Charles Educational Foundation, which helps children afford education.
Traditional pre-Christmas festivities called the Nine Mornings celebrations start nine days before Christmas and take place throughout the islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Activities include early-morning bicycle races, a caroling competition, best village competition and more starting on December 16. The origins of this festivity are clouded in some mystery, although the original tradition relates it to the ‘novena’ of the Catholic Church
The Canouan Regatta attracts the region’s best sailors during the month of May. Enjoy boat races, sports and games, calypso competitions, street jump and beauty pageants.
