Advance preparation is always a good key to a rewarding travel experience. It’s never too early to start thinking ahead.

The first thing you can do is learn about the places you plan to visit. Familiarize yourself with local laws and customs in those areas. Go to the library, visit travel agents or tourist bureaus and keep track of news about the countries you plan to visit.

Health and fitness is very important to seniors and if you don’t already have a regular exercise routine you will need one to undertake any kind of travel. Remember that travel involves movement of luggage and climbing up and down stairs, getting off boats, hiking and other physical activities. The fitter you are will make the journey easier and more enjoyable.

Gear Requirements/Packing lists

Take as little as possible with you when you travel. Firstly it will make your bag too heavy to manage, plus you become an easy target for thieves and predators. Leave expensive jewelry or irreplaceable objects at home along with unnecessary credit cards.

When you pack, try to use layers for the cold rather than large bulky jackets or coats. You should also aim to pack items that can be utilized in different combinations to cut down on the items you need. Use every spare inch of the luggage space when you pack, stuffing socks and underwear into your shoes and rolling up your sweaters or putting small items into the corners to fill spaces.

If you require any special medicines or other items always keep these in your hand luggage in case the suitcase is lost in transit. Be practical about what you take. Don’t get new shoes for the hikes; use ones that are reliable but comfortable. Make sure you pack the appropriate items for the itinerary and study this before you set out. Expedition style cruises aren’t luxury liners and you won’t need a ball gown.

Photographic equipment is always a must but limit the equipment you pack. Make sure you bring plenty of film and extra camera batteries with you.
