Season

Musicals, opera, dance and exhibitions enjoy a limited life so if there is something you really want to see you will need to check how long it is running. On the other hand the ever-changing variety of the arts and music scene will mean you can be pleasantly surprised whenever you go. Most tour companies run programs all year round but holiday and festival periods can get booked out well in advance.

Fitness

Usually these are not demanding vacations but you may have to be on your feet for long periods. The more mobile you are will make it easier for you to take in the full program or highlights of your destination.

Tours

Consider tour descriptions carefully before making any bookings. Online descriptions and brochures are often available and you can also read the comments of previous participants. Try to choose tours that have limited group sizes so that the leader can tutor effectively. A small group will also allow more room for work in activity rooms and even for sitting on the coaches.

Skill level

Most tour operators will outline the skills required to join their activities/tour. Many are open to all regardless of ability or knowledge. If it does require some kind of skill level you may need to determine if your abilities are up to par. Most tour companies will put you in touch with the leader if there is some assessment involved.

Singles vs. couples

These itineraries appeal to people of all ages and interests, both singles and couples. Most small group tours allow you to mix with others and will cater for both couples and singles.

Families

Vacations of this kind mostly cater for adults however children can be slotted in to these itineraries. For example many museums now have children’s activity sections, there are often matinee performances of theatrical and musical performances and literary walking trails can be cut down to cater for little legs. So don’t rule out taking your children with you.
