Language

English is spoken throughout New Hampshire, without much of the accent found in neighboring states like Boston and Maine.

Currency

The currency in New Hampshire is the US dollar (US $). Banknotes come in denominations of US $1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100. There are 100 cents to one dollar with coins in denominations of 1, 5, 10, and 25 cent pieces. Since much of the state is very rural, it’s suggested you exchange any foreign currency at the airport or at a bank in one of the larger cities like Manchester or Concord. ATMs are easy to find in most towns, and credit cards like MasterCard and Visa are accepted at all but the smallest mom and pop shops in the countryside.

Time

New Hampshire is in the Eastern Time Zone (GMT -5, GMT -4 between March 12 and November 4 during daylight savings).

Electricity

New Hampshire uses electricity at 110-120 V, 60 Hz. Flat two-prong plugs are typical, so it is recommended that you bring a universal adapter if you are coming from Europe or Asia.

Communications

The dialing code for the United States is +1. New Hampshire has just one area code for the entire state: 603. You can expect good mobile phone coverage throughout the southern and coastal regions, but spotty reception in the far north and mountainous areas inside the White Mountains. Internet access is only easy to find in the college towns like Exeter and Hanover, or tourist destinations of Portsmouth and North Conway.

Duty-free

Every visitor to the United States over the age of 18 is allowed to bring one liter of alcohol, 200 cigarettes (or 50 non-Cuban cigars or two kilograms of tobacco) and gifts valued up to US $400 without paying tax.
