Mataveri International Airport
Although Easter Island is hardly within easy reach, it is still not as difficult to get there as might be expected. Scheduled flights to Mataveri International Airport, the most remote air hub in the world, depart from the Chilean capital of Santiago on a daily basis, and there are now services to Lima, the capital of Peru. Both are courtesy of LAN, Chile’s flag carrier, which also flies once per week to Tahiti.
Although these departure points are themselves a long-haul flight away for many visitors, Easter Island makes something of a convenient stopover for travelers on round-the–world tickets and who are looking to connect the dots between the South Pacific and South America, normally a lengthy flight. Some hotels in Chile offer expensive packages that include an overnight stay on the island and a return flight.
