Newfoundland and Labrador Taxis and Car Rentals
The appropriately named City Wide Taxi (+1-709-722-0003) is among the main taxi providers in St. John’s, but most smaller Newfoundland and Labrador communities also have their own taxi companies, such as Corner Brook’s City Cabs (+1-709-634-6565). However, car rental is undoubtedly the most practical way to travel across rural Newfoundland and Labrador, where distances are vast and larger towns can be several miles apart. Although the Trans-Canada Highway linking St. John’s with Newfoundland’s westernmost community of Port Aux Basques is in fairly good shape, most other Newfoundland and Labrador highways are laden with potholes and poor quality pavement. Although driving in Labrador has been easier since the 2009 Trans Labrador Highway completion, all drivers should keep full gas cans, plenty of food, and survival kits in their vehicle just in case of Labrador’s isolated roads.
Newfoundland and Labrador Water Taxis
Ferries are among the most popular form of transportation to and around Newfoundland and Labrador. Marine Atlantic runs the main car ferry service between Port aux Basques on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland and North Sydney, Nova Scotia, as well as a summer service between North Sydney and Argentia. Advance reservations are highly recommended, especially for motorists bringing vehicles other than regular passenger cars. Ferries are also among the few ways to travel directly between Newfoundland and Labrador, but visitors can also take the seasonal ferry from the Newfoundland Northern Peninsula community of St. Barbe and Blanc Sablon, Québec, and then drive directly into Labrador. There are a total of roughly 15 different ferry routes to and from ports throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
Newfoundland and Labrador Trains and Buses
Metrobus, the main inner-city bus service in St. John’s, travels throughout the city and its surrounding area at a very affordable price. Corner Brook is one of the few other Newfoundland and Labrador regions with an inner-city bus network, which has six routes through downtown.
Newfoundland and Labrador’s main inter-city bus lines are DRL Coachlines and Newhook’s Transportation, both of which regularly make the long journey between Port Aux Basques and St. John’s. Viking Express is the main bus company for transport between Corner Brook, Deer Lake, and Newfoundland’s Northern Peninsula. Buckle’s Busing travels throughout Newfoundland and southern Labrador.
Although the island of Newfoundland has had no passenger rail service since 1988, the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway links Labrador City to Sept-Îles, Quebec with 257 miles of beautiful wilderness in between.
