Narita International Airport

One of the busiest airports in the world and a main gateway for all major countries in Asia, Narita International Airport is located 35 miles outside Tokyo and is the main hub for international air arrivals to Japan. It’s a modern, efficient airport linked to Tokyo via an express train that takes 45 minutes, as well as by a slower rail link, limousine buses, and shared and private taxis. A direct train route runs from Narita to Tokyo’s domestic airport, Haneda for local connections.

Direct flights are offered by both full-service and budget airlines from everywhere in the world, with international travelers from Asian, Middle Eastern and some European destinations arriving in Terminal 1 South, passengers from the Americas using mostly Terminal 1 North and JAL and UK passengers in Terminal 2.

Haneda Airport mainly handles domestic flights to Japan, although the complex now has a dedicated international terminal for flights to New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, London, and several European and Asian cities. Passenger facilities are excellent and the complex is linked to central Tokyo via the Tokyo Monorail, limousine buses, and shared or private taxis.

Osaka Kansai International Airport

Set on a manmade island in Osaka Bay, Osaka Kansai International Airport is the air gateway to Kyoto and Nara in central Japan. Routes to New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, and Asia are all offered by full-service airlines. The terminal is ultra-modern and provides all the usual services, including car rental. The fastest ground transportation is by train via the airport’s station, but limousine buses, shared minibuses, and taxis are also available.

New Chitose International Airport

Sapporo, the regional capital of Hokkaido, is served by New Chitose International Airport, located three miles from Chitose city and a short distance from Sapporo. International flights are restricted to Asian destinations and Honolulu, and domestic flights link Sapporo with Osaka and Tokyo in Japan. A direct rail connection to Sapporo takes half an hour and several local bus lines, as well as taxis serve the airport.

Naha Airport

For visitors heading to Okinawa, Naha Airport is the main air arrivals hub, supporting flights from Tokyo’s Narita and Haneda airports in addition to international flights from Hong Kong and other Asian cities. Passengers can use the Okinawa Monorail to get from Shuri Station to Naha’s center, while buses serve many parts of the island from the terminal.

It’s a small facility, hosting only one Delta Airlines flight from Honolulu and a few international routes from across Asia and domestic flights from Tokyo Narita, Osaka Kansai, and other Japanese cities. The terminal is just a 10-minute Fukuoka City Subway ride from thebusiness district.
