This hike takes you to the very heart of the Bernese Alps with green valleys and snow fields and glaciers that blanket the 13,026-foot Eiger, 13,449-foot Münch and 13,643-foot Jungfrau, the center of the Alpine region. The north wall of the Eiger has a high vertical face, but the trail here gets you up close. In the center of the three mountains sits Grindelwald, where you can take excursions to the Jungfraujoch, dubbed the Top of Europe, or reach nearby resort Interlaken.
The area around Grindelwald features 300 kilometers of walking trails, the most popular being the high-altitude walk from Grindelwald that takes you along the Bachalpsee to the Faulhorn mountain and then on to the Schynige Platte. Along the way, find breathtaking views of Eiger, Münch and Jungfrau that leads from the Männlichen up onto the Kleine Scheidegg.
During the winter, two ski regions, First and Kleine Scheidegg - Männlichen - Wengen, offer 160 kilometers of pistes along with around 30 lifts that lead to 2,500 meters. You can find 80 kilometers of winter walking trails with views across peaks and majestic glaciers, as well as 60 kilometers of toboggan runs.
Getting There
Most trips to this region start from Interlaken and use trains to reach Grindelwald. From Zürich, travel to Wengen via Bern, Interlaken Ost and Lauterbrunnen.
Preparation
While most of the trails require no equipment, you should be prepared to brave the high altitudes of the region.
Trail Options
Any part of the hikes in the region can be broken down into shorter treks. Cable cars and trains can also shorten the route.
