Back in its earliest days, mining was an integral part of Mammoth Lakes. The discovery of the Comstock Lode in 1858 brought in swarms of prospectors who were eager to make their fortunes.

Originally inhabited by members of the Native American Washoe tribe, Lake Tahoe – which, at 1,600 feet deep, is the second-deepest in the United States – was discovered by Western people in the 1840s.
