Bosnia and Herzegovina enjoys a pleasant mix of central European and Mediterranean climates, so expect hot summers and chilly winters. In elevated areas, snowfall can last until April, and typical winter temperatures average 28°F. Hot spells during summer bring temperatures up to 80°F. The country experiences variable weather conditions as a result of its hilly and mountainous terrain.

Avoid the cold months if you are a hiker, unless you are up for a challenging, chilly ascent and tricky, snow-covered trails. Ski resorts are open at least four months a year. When planning your wardrobe, be sure to bring warm clothes and a jacket during winter and lightweight shirts for summer. If you are planning to visit the wetter and colder northern towns and higher altitude regions, it is best to pack for cold temperatures regardless of the time of year.

Best Time to Visit Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a great place to visit any time of the year. Warm summer seasons see plenty of hikers, nature trippers, and adventure seekers flocking to the mountains for fun in the sun. Winter and fall attract ski enthusiasts looking for Alpine adventures. The country looks beautiful in spring, when the fields are in bloom and temperatures are pleasant throughout the day.

Nature enthusiasts should save their Bosnia holidays for the months of October and November, when the forests are a lovely mix of colors. Skiers will best enjoy the slopes from January to March. Some fantastic Olympic ski areas can be found in the Jahorina, Igman and Bjelasnica mountains. You should, however, anticipate crowds during this time. Be smart when planning logistics and itineraries and make sure to have advance reservations for hotels closest to the ski lift.
