  5. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, India This is another popular train ride in India known as the “toy train”. It is actually a UN World Heritage Site. It starts in Darjeeling and winds leisurely into the Himalayan foothills. If you can afford the Windamere Hotel in Darjeeling you’ll experience all the grandeur of the British Raj – white-gloved, turbaned waiters and candelit dinners. If you can’t afford it drop in just for afternoon tea and a unique taste of the area.
  6. Halong Bay, Vietnam Take a cruise on a houseboat into the island studded waters of Halong Bay. Mist shrouded mountains form the backdrop for hundreds of rocky islets scattered across these deep-blue waters. Dabble in kayaking, swimming or hike ashore.
  7. Cherry Blossoms, Japan Come to Japan in Springtime to see the wonderful cherry blossoms in full bloom in the parks and gardens of Japan. What makes this special time even better are the groups of families and friends that congregate under the trees to celebrate Spring with picnics and festivities.
  8. Macau Macau is the cleanest city in the world after Singapore and is a friendly, easy travel option for the senior traveler. Not only do the locals speak excellent English, the parks and gardens are a delight, there is an old world atmosphere in the former Portuguese colony, wonderful boutique stores and great food featuring Chinese and Portuguese specialties.
  9. Shopping, Hong Kong Utilize any free stopovers in Hong Kong as an opportunity to fill your suit-cases. The high-rise heaven has cheap, attractive and bountiful markets are everywhere with clothing, house hold knick knacks, shoes, fish, flowers and anything else you can imagine on sale. Make sure you take time to visit Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, Lantau and even get over to the Chinese mainland.
  10. Trans Mongolian If you’ve always wanted to tackle a remote place like Mongolia, but are a little afraid of the hardships involved this 36 hour train journey from Beijing to the capital Ulaanbaatar is not so rigorous. It takes you right through the Gobi desert and you can spend several days in and around the city before heading back to China.
