Sarawak Regatta

Held on the Sarawak River at Kuching, the state capital, the annual Sarawak Regatta draws on the country’s rich history and traditions. Originally a contest between different tribes who raced their war canoes against one another, the event is now a great family day out and each year draws huge crowds that line the riverbank. After the traditional canoe races, kayaks and jet-skis take to the water to wow the crowds.

Colorful Hindu festival celebrated mainly my Malaysians of Tamil origin, and famous mainly for the painful-looking body piercings undergone by some of the participants. Batu Caves is the venue for this spectacular event in Kuala Lumpur, which attracts hordes of celebrants.

Chinese New Year

KL’s version of the well known annual Chinese celebrations – people of Chinese origin make up the largest minority in Malaysia. Centerd on Chinatown, the festivities include dragon dances, fireworks and of course feasting.

F1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix

The Formula One circus comes to town on its annual visit to the Sepang Circuit close to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Currently the third race of the annual F1 calendar, it first took place in 1999.

Borneo Jazz Festival

Formerly known as the Miri International Jazz Festival, the Borneo Jazz Festival features a range of jazz styles plus a dash of blues, rock and rhythms from across the globe. Highlights on this year’s bill include Grammy-nominated American Maria Muldaur (’Midnight at the Oasis’, ‘I’m a W.O.M.A.N.’) and US blues guitar legend John Hammond. The lush tropical setting, fabulous food, stalls selling cultural treasures and concert merchandise all add to the charm of the exotic location and party atmosphere.
