Canada — Accommodations

Hotels

International hotel chains are represented in major cities, but advance booking is advised. Guest houses, bed & breakfast establishments and self-catering lodges are available throughout the country.

Grading: The voluntary Canada Select accommodation grading system (www.canadaselect.com) operates across the country. In many cases, non-profit groups or industry associations assess the properties. See the individual provinces and territories sections for details.

Camping/Caravanning

Camping facilities in the national parks are generally only open from mid May until the end of September. There is also a huge range of private campgrounds, a few of which are open year round. (Be forewarned, though, that winter camping is a demanding activity requiring experience and preparation.) The voluntary Camping Select grading program (www.campingselect.ca) currently operates in eight provinces. Drivers who hold full licenses and are aged over 25 can hire campers and motorhomes.

Youth Hostels

There are youth hostels in cities across the country and in several national parks.

Lodges

Remote hunting lodges are available to rent. This accommodation is ideal for fishing, hunting and hiking enthusiasts. Some are equipped with spacious living areas and even have spa facilities, while others are decidedly more rustic. They are a popular way to sample life in the wilderness.

Campus Accommodation

Most universities offer budget-price accommodation during the summer vacation, usually between late May and mid August.
